Story
Pip was a curious little pig with a nose that led him everywhere. Every morning, Mama Pig gave the same rule: “Stay inside the fence, Pip. The road is dangerous.”

One day, Pip’s nose caught a wonderful smell drifting from beyond the gate. Warm corn! “Just a tiny sniff,” he whispered. He squeezed under the loose board and trotted down the road.

The smell led him to a field, but when he turned around, everything looked the same.

Pigs have poor eyesight, and Pip couldn’t see the farm anywhere. His nose, so clever a moment ago, was only full of strange smells. A tractor rumbled close, and Pip froze, shaking.

Then he heard a squeal in the distance. It was Mama Pig, calling his name. Pigs know their mothers’ voices, and Pip ran toward it as fast as his trotters could carry him.

“Oh, Mama, I’m sorry!” he cried. “I should have listened.”
“I made the rule because I love you,” Mama said, nuzzling him. “I could see the danger you couldn’t.”

Pip never squeezed under the fence again. He learned that a rule is often a wall of love, put there by someone who can see farther than you can.
The moral: Obedience keeps us safe, because those who love us can often see dangers we cannot.
Pip snuggled close to Mama that night and whispered, “I’ll listen next time.” And Mama smiled, because she knew that a listening heart is a safe heart.

Pig traits used: a strong nose (temptation), poor eyesight (limited view), and recognizing a mother’s voice (being called back home).
Talk about it
Why did Mama Pig make the rule about the fence?
Can you think of a rule at home that keeps you safe?
Let us pray
Dear God, thank you for parents who love us and keep us safe. Help me to listen and obey, even when I don’t understand the rule. Thank you for always calling me back home when I wander. Amen.
